Founder Insight #9: AI should reduce friction — not remove humanity
AI should reduce friction — not remove humanity
It’s difficult to have a business conversation today without hearing about AI.
Some people are excited. Some are skeptical. Many are overwhelmed. And honestly, I understand all three reactions.
What I’ve noticed recently is that much of the discussion around AI focuses heavily on replacement: replacing people, teams, communication, and creative work.
But I think that framing misses something important.
The most valuable use of AI in business may not be replacing human connection. It may be protecting it.
When businesses are operationally overwhelmed, customer experience often suffers from slower responses, inconsistent follow-up, missed communication, fragmented information, and mental overload behind the scenes.
Used thoughtfully, AI can help reduce some of that friction.
Not by making businesses feel robotic.
But by helping people operate with more clarity, responsiveness, and consistency.
That’s the distinction I keep coming back to.
Technology should support human relationships—not weaken them.
I explored this idea further in a recent Business on Autopilot episode: “The Future-Proof Business: How to Use AI Without Losing the Human Touch.”
One idea from that conversation stayed with me afterward:
Customers may appreciate efficiency.
But they still remember how a business made them feel.
That’s why I believe the best AI implementations are often the least visible.
Customers simply experience clearer communication, faster acknowledgment, smoother processes, more consistency, and less frustration.
The technology fades into the background.
The relationship becomes easier.
And in many ways, that may be where modern businesses create the greatest long-term advantage.
If you’d like to listen to the full episode, you can find it here.
One question I’ve been reflecting on recently:
Where could technology reduce friction in your business without making the experience feel less human?
