Founder Insight #6A: Work was never meant to consume everything
Work was never meant to consume everything
As Labor Day approaches, I’ve been reflecting on the relationship many of us have with work.
For entrepreneurs and professionals in particular, work often becomes more than just a career.
It becomes a responsibility, an identity, an ambition, a purpose, and sometimes even personal validation.
There’s nothing wrong with caring deeply about what we build. In many ways, meaningful work can be incredibly fulfilling.
But I also think modern business culture quietly encourages something unhealthy at times: The belief that constant exhaustion is a sign of commitment.
Over the years, I’ve seen many capable business owners normalize mental overload, nonstop responsiveness, endless operational chaos, lack of rest, and the feeling of never fully “switching off”.
And because so many others operate the same way, it can begin to feel normal. But I’m not sure it should be.
One realization I keep returning to is this:
A sustainable business should eventually create more stability and breathing room—not permanent stress.
That doesn’t happen automatically.
It usually requires intentional choices:
simplifying systems
reducing unnecessary complexity
creating healthier boundaries
building better operational support
and letting go of the idea that everything must depend on constant personal effort
Ironically, some of the healthiest businesses I’ve observed are not always the busiest-looking ones. They are often the clearest, calmest, and most operationally intentional.
As we head into Labor Day weekend, I simply wanted to share that reflection.
I hope you’re able to take some time to rest, recharge, and step back from the constant pace that modern business life can create.
Sometimes clarity comes more easily after we pause.
